Nova Scotia Student Assistance, Labour and Advanced Education is dedicated to helping academically qualified students in Nova Scotia access they financial resources they need to pursue post-secondary education. NS Student Assistance administers Canada Student Loan Program’s loans and grants, as well as Nova Scotia loans and grants.
The program continues to be revised to benefit students. The books and supplies allowance has increased, allowing more financial assistance for students. Nova Scotia has also increased grant amounts from 20 to 30 percent. All students who apply through Nova Scotia Assistance are eligible for these non-repayable grants.
In 2011, Nova Scotia announced the first “debt cap” in the province’s history, providing Nova Scotian students who complete an undergraduate degree, and have a Nova Scotia Student Loan, with a new $28,560 maximum debt cap. In 2011 numbers, Nova Scotia students who begin their program in fall 2011 or later will have approximately $16,320 less debt when they graduate.
